Today I had my first meeting with Parents as Teachers. I am really interested in this program as a possible career choice after my kiddos start school so I emailed the director this week asking to get enrolled in it. I figure, if I participated in the program now then I would be familiar with the services for when I am ready to apply. I am so glad I contacted them!
The first thing the lady said today was that their program had half of it's funding cut in the last year so they were only offering services to certain families who meet requirements. Jack spent a week in the NICU so we automatically qualified. Today she screened Mia and even though I knew that Mia was advanced for her age, I hadn't realized HOW advance she is.
Our next visit is on Nov. 3rd and Addie will get her screening done then. Usually they only come once a month but because I have 3 children, she said she will likely come every 2 weeks so she can focus on one or two of the kiddos at a time instead of trying to fit all 3 into the hour long visitation. It doesn't bother me though, I think it is a great program so I am excited to get involved as much as possible. Zach doesn't think that it is necessary for me since he thinks I am "supermom" but I think it's a great way to learn even MORE things that I can do to help the kids reach their maximum potential.
There is a group meeting coming up in a few weeks that I am planning on attending with the kids so they can get a chance to meet some new friends.
The lady (I can't remember what her name is) also talked to me a little about the job itself and I am very interested in it. The hours are flexible, she works when she wants to work--which is great for moms. I can always make sure I am off work in time to pick the kids up from school and I can always be available for field trips, etc. I know it will still be a while before I enter the workforce but it is still nice to explore different possible career paths now. : )
